I have always written about myself and those around me even in my fiction, since my first writing workshop at Hunter College. It was not until I went to VONA/Voices the first time in 2015 that I realized that my voice as a Latina mattered, but was necessary. That stories like mine provided both mirrors and windows, where readers could see themselves and know that they existed in books, but also provided a window for others to see a different experience than their own. My intention as a writer began to be centered around telling my experiences as Latina woman through personal essay, as well stories crafted around characters that do not apologize, show all of their humanity, and happen to be Latino.
